Description
Write a report on protection in operating systems. Use chapter 5 from Whitman & Mattord as a
guideline. Choose any version of Windows as your frame of reference and report on how it
achieves/implements the following:
• Separation
• Memory and address protection
• File protection
• User authentication, especially passwords
• Policy, trust and assurance
Do not forget to address open source software/operating systems as well, specifically what they
contribute with regards to improving operating system security. Especially for this assignment
consult user/community forums and also technical papers, amongst your other sources.
Focus on documenting current practices, identifying shortcomings from your perspective and making
recommendations where and when relevant.
The report will be evaluated out of 50 marks.
